How To Roll The Perfect Kief Joint

Marijuana smokers are an inventive bunch, as I often tout. Not only can they make pipes and bongs out of practically any object that can be hollowed, they can create works of art often with only rolling papers and weed.

If you’ve ever been curious how to create the perfect Kief joint, well, read below and let me know in the comment section how far you go.

Oh, and what is Kief?

Kief, keef or keif is a fine powder made from dried resin glands (trichomes) that are found on the leaves of the cannabis plant. It contains a high concentration of the psychoactive chemical or THC that causes euphoric feelings or opium-like high that can last for hours. Kief is also called crystal or pollen.

Step 1: Get A LOT of Kief

This is going to be the hardest part of the process, as you have to go about getting your Kief in two ways:

a) Collect it within your grinder–a rather long and arduous process seeing as you would need to be grinding a fair amount of weed on the daily to accumulate a significant amount. If you smoke like Wiz Khalifa or Snoop Dogg I guess this shouldn’t be an issue. But if you’re a mere mortal you might want to consider the second option.

b) Purchase it at your local marijuana dispensary or collective. This is probably your best bet. Kief is rather cheap ($10-15 for a couple of grams) so buy a couple of small containers and you should be good.

Step 2: Get ALL Your Tools Ready

Remember, it’s all about set and setting. Not only is this true in the process of getting high, it’s true for the process of trying to get high. Make sure you’re in a place where you won’t be bothered and gather the following tools:

  • A Flat Iron (If you don’t have one ask your local pimp)
  • Dull Knife (the kind you spread peanut butter with)
  • Wax Paper (I swear this is for a joint)
  • Some Finely Ground Bud (to top off your kief creation)

Once you’ve gathered all your tools you’re ready to build your very own kief joint! Turn on your flat iron to its lowest setting. Get your wax paper and fold it in half, then open it, making sure it stays open. Grab your kief and dump as much of it as you can into a pile, using your dull knife to spread it into a somewhat thin, uniform layer.

Step 3: Create Your Kief “Paper”

Fold your wax paper so that the kief is in the middle. Like the Rosin Extraction Techniqueyou press the flat-iron on the kief (as it rests between the wax paper) heating it.  The goal here is to create a flat “tortilla shape”. You will know the kief is ready once it changes color, although I would recommend pressing for about 10 seconds or so. If somehow you have the technology (or skill) to flatten your kief into a rectangular shape, then hey, even more power to you.

Step 4: Roll That Sh*t Up

Once your kief has softened into a solid layer, carefully peel the paper away and gently roll your creation into a joint/cone shape. As tempting as it is, don’t put any weed into your joint just yet as it still needs to harden a bit, and even small stems can puncture your hard work at this stage.

Step 5: Load Up Your Kief Joint

Okay here comes the fun part, because this is where you get to smoke this bad boy. Pinch one end of your kief joint closed (again cone shape would be your best bet) and load your FINELY ground pot into the other end.  Open the closed end with a little pressure from your fingertips and you’re in the game. Useful Tip: When smoking, don’t ash or press too hard on the joint, as you will lose the cherry and waste that hard-earned kief!
