Artist Zach Fernandez Arrested In The Case Of The ‘HOLLYWEED’ Sign
Whoops. Looks like I was a little presumptuous to assume Los Angeles police had more pressing matters to tend to than a sign vandal, but then again presumptions are the hallmark of a true American.
The LAPD said in a statement this week that 30-year-old Zachary Cole Fernandez was formally arrested Monday, just over a week after the pot prankster used white tarps to make the “HOLLYWOOD” sign to read “HOLLYWEED.” Fernandez turned himself in along with his attorney and was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor trespassing.
Fernandez, a local artist, had already claimed credit for the stunt in a Vice magazine interview, but police had not previously confirmed his involvement. Fernandez and his creative partner/former wife, Sarah Fern came up with the idea after being inspired by a similar stunt performed in 1976 by artist Danny Finegood.
Fernandez creates art under the name Jesus Hands, a name that can be seen written on the Hollywood sign in close-up photos. He’ll be released on his own recognizance and must return to court Feb. 15. Contact information could not be found for Fernandez or his attorney.
When asked if they had plans for future stunts, Fernandez made it clear that his performance days were far from over.
“We’ve really been putting our best foot forward. We’ve been doing things a bit backward. We have four kids together. I just want to live and be an example for my kids. I just look for like-minded people to collaborate with.” he stated.
“We’re always looking for the next thing” added Fern.
